SR 802 conceptually begins at Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) near the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and heads east towards Pinal County as part of the Regional Transportation Plan approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. Once in Pinal County, the route continues east and southeast and could join with either US 60 or SR 79. Funding plans call for final design and construction of the portion of SR 802 within Maricopa County to begin after 2015. No funding is currently identified for the portions within Pinal County. The SR 802 (Williams Gateway Freeway) study area lies within or adjacent to the jurisdictional boundaries of the cities of Mesa and Apache Junction, the Towns of Queen Creek and Gilbert, and unincorporated portions of Maricopa and Pinal Counties.
The ADOT mission is to provide a proactive and effective process to communicate with and serve the local area residents within the SR 802 study area, as well as the people of Arizona. ADOT is committed to involving the public and agency stakeholders in the decision-making process. For more information, please visit: www.azdot.gov/ValleyFreeways/SR802 Additional Upcoming Events... Queen Creek residents are encouraged to provide comments regarding the placement of a local high voltage line. SRP has determined final route alternatives to site a 20-mile, 230,000 volt (230 kV) transmission line that will likely run through parts of Queen Creek. This project belongs exclusively to SRP—the Town, in many respects, plays a role in the process similar to local property owners, residents and other stakeholders. The Town does not have the authority to approve or disapprove a power line.
The 230 kV line, dubbed Abel-Moody, will connect the Moody Substation at Recker and Pecos roads with the Abel Substation currently under construction at Judd and Attaway roads; a third substation will be constructed between the Moody and Abel substations, possibly in Queen Creek, and will connect to the line as well. The project in-service date is scheduled for summer 2012. At the July 16 Town Council meeting, Resolution 748-08 was approved providing areas where the Town would favorably view placement of the line, as well as areas that the line should not be placed. On Oct. 15, the Town Council unanimously approved Resolution 760-08, which specifically defines the Town-preferred alignment of the line through the northern portion of the Town, from Germann Road and then east to Meridian; this alignment avoids the Town Center area. SRP is expected to present a couple of line siting options in its application to the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) who will grant the final approval of the line siting. The ACC will have the benefit of all the public comments, SRP’s engineering analysis and the Town Council’s resolution, to help make a determination. SRP is expecting to file their case with the ACC in April.
